The Pelham Powell Drywall Midget AE Panthers scored a tournament championship this past weekend at the Caledonia Challenge Cup.
The Panthers went 1-1-1 in the round robin play, facing teams that are in the OMHA Playdown category for this season. They then had to face Dorchester in the semi final. Great goaltending saved the Panthers early in the game from going down a few, and the team scored a third period goal to tie the game. After an Overtime period saw neither team victorious, things came down to a shootout to determine who would advance. Doan and then Crysler scored for Pelham, and goaltender Powell stopped the last two Dorchester shooters, and Pelham advanced to the finals.
Pelham had to play Mt Brydges in the finals, which turned out to be a very evenly matched game. Both teams had glorious scoring opportunities throughout the game, but goalie Nunn made a few great saves including a glove snipe in the late stages of the third. The teams played through the entire game to a 0-0 tie. Again, this set up an overtime period.
Nineteen seconds in, Leduc brought the puck down the right side, tossed one to the net creating a juicy rebound, and Doan hammered in a close proximity pad rebound to put Pelham in to the victory circle with a 1-0 win.
